Protecting Our Medical Future with a Health IT Degree

Health information technology, also called Health IT or HIT, is a vital part of patient medical care. It uses data technology to safely and accurately process, store, and exchange critical patient information in an electronic setting. Properly executed Health IT makes patient health records readily available for medical treatment, billing, legal use, and other purposes while still maintaining privacy and security.

The Growing Field of Health Information Technology

You could be a good candidate for a HIT career if you’re interested in both healthcare and information technology. Specialists in this field work closely with registered nurses and other healthcare workers, but they don’t interact directly with patients.

The healthcare industry is looking for more Health IT professionals to protect our medical future. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in this field is projected to grow 8% from 2019 to 2029. This is a much faster pace than the average for all occupations.

The fast growth rate stems from today’s aging population and the anticipated need for additional medical services in the coming years. As more insurance claims are filed and the use of electronic health records (EHRs) becomes more widespread, the industry will look to HIT specialists to fill this need.

Benefits of Health IT

This career offers the following benefits to patients:

  • Improved quality of healthcare
  • Fewer medical errors
  • Reduced healthcare costs
  • More efficient administrations
  • Decreased paperwork
  • Expanded access to affordable care

Career Opportunities in Health IT

Specialists in this field may work in a surprising range of industries, including healthcare corporations, software companies, and government agencies. Possible places of employment include:

  • Hospitals
  • Doctors’ offices
  • Rehab centers
  • Mental health facilities
  • Nursing homes
  • Health insurance offices
  • Health IT departments
  • And more
