Baltimore, MD—–Former ASA College defensive back, Andre Kates, has signed a free agent contract with the 2013 Super Bowl Champion, Baltimore Ravens. Kates is the second Avenger in a couple of days to be invited to an NFL camp this summer. On Saturday, former defensive lineman, Gilbert Pena, signed with the Green Bay Packers as a free agent.

Kates, a starting cornerback on the inaugural ASA football team in 2009, finished up his collegiate career at Virginia Union after playing a season at the University of Indiana, the school he signed with out of ASA.

The Washington D.C. native was a big part of the ASA football program’s immediate success. He finished his sophomore season with the Avengers with 64 tackles, two sacks, two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), and six blocked kicks.

Kates was one of only two Division II players to be invited and play in the NFL Players’ Association Collegiate Bowl after his senior season at Virginia Union.
