ASA Transfer Fair- Wednesday
ASA AVENGERS ARE THE 2012 NORTHEAST FOOTBALL CONFERENCE CHAMPS!
Brooklyn, NY—-In what was projected in a release by the NJCAA to be the ‘Game of the Week’ turned out to be just that at Old Boys High Field this afternoon. ASA would come out on top in the final seconds of the game on a 36-yard Cherchen Aloema field goal. ASA completes their undefeated championship regular season with a 9-0 record (5-0 in the NEFC). Nassau finishes the season with a 9-1 record (4-1 in the NEFC).
Nassau would break the 0-0 tie halfway through the first quarter on a 30-yard John Scelfo field goal. ASA would answer the call on the next drive quickly marching down the field in under three minutes. Sophomore running back Hosey Williams would cap the drive off on a 4-yard touchdown run. Williams has now rushed for over 1,000 yards for the season and is ASA’s all-time leading rusher! The horse from Miami, FL finished the game with 185 yards (179 yards rushing).
Early in the second quarter, Nassau would retake the lead on a 5-yard Travis Lock run. Once again, the Avengers would answer the call with a 1-yard Brandon Stout run. The Avengers finished the first half with the 14-10 lead.
The third quarter was a true test for the Avengers, as Nassau would twice in a row, the latter score after an ASA turnover. Keeping their composure, ASA would eventually score with 4:35 remaining in the third quarter cutting the Lions’ lead to 24-20. The score came on a 7-yard run by sophomore sensation Ouslet Volcy. Volcy would demonstrate his entire arsenal by returning a kickoff for 69 yards, catching seven passes for 94 yards, and rushing for 12 yards on two runs.
If the third quarter was a test for ASA, the fourth could be considered the final exam. An exam the Avengers studied for and were determined pass. After a field goal and an ASA safety, the Avengers found themselves down 29-20 with 7:44 remaining in the game. The Avengers dug deep on defense for two key defensive stops with under five minutes remaining in the game, and rallied around freshman quarterback, Daniel Pietrangelo, who would lead them to the promised land. Using a “hurry-up” offense, ASA cut the Nassau lead to 29-27 after a 70-yard drive capped by a 9-yard James Kennertouchdown run. After a “three and out” Nassau drive, ASA would regain possession on their own 36-yard line. Once again, Pietrangelo and the Avengers quickly marched down the field to the Nassau 19-yard line to set up the game winning field goal by Aloema.
ASA has a number of bowl options. A decision on which bowl the Avengers will play in should be made sometime this week.
