Fishkill, NY – It was a story-book ending once again for the ASA baseball team as they repeat as Region XV-Division I champions. The title comes once again by way of a two-game sweep of Monroe in a three-game playoff series.

The ASA pitching was the difference in the series. In the first game of the series, the 2011 Region XV- Division I Player of the Year, Jonathan Sanchez (Cotui, DR) was solid as usual. Sanchez would pitch all nine innings and the ASA offense would give him the room he needed for the 3-2 win. Sanchez would steal the show in the top of the ninth inning to finish what he started. With runners on second base and third base and no outs, Sanchez would live up to his name as the Player of the Year in the Region. He would strike out the next three batters, all swinging!

In the second game of the day and a chance to close out the series for the series, the Avengers would once again rise to the occasion. Sophomore sensation pitcher Isaac Gil (New York, NY) was on cruise control, never allowing the Monroe offense to get into any type of rhythm, allowing only three hits. Gil also pitched all nine innings for the 4-0 shutout win and the Region XV title!

Sophomore first baseman Nelson Arroyo (Bronx, NY) had a solid series for the Avengers hitting 3-7 (2-3 in Game 1) and scoring one of the three runs in the first game. Freshman right-fielder Eduardo Valdez (Los Mina, DR) scored one run in each game, and double and triple in the series.

The Avengers will now move onto the Region XX Tournament where they are guaranteed the #3 seed in the four team double elimination tournament. ASA will play host, Potomac (West Virginia), at 10am on Friday (May 13th), and then Harford Community College will face Anne Arundel Community College next in the double elimination tournament that runs through Sunday (May 15th).
