At Making Strides Against Breast Cancer ASA College Family Represents
ASA Faculty, Staff, and Provost Dr. Shanthi Konkoth represented ASA at the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event hosted by the American Cancer Society in Central Park on Sunday, October 17th. Hundreds of participants returned to the event after a year hiatus due to Covid-19. It was an uplifting experience for all who walked, ran, and supported. ASA College’s Division of Health Disciplines Dean, Dr. Nasser Sedhom organized participation in the event to demonstrate our commitment to public health and medical research. One in eight American women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer during their lifetimes, and there are over 3.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. Perhaps most importantly, 63% of breast cancer cases are diagnosed at a localized stage (there is no sign that cancer has spread outside of the breast), for which the 5-year survival rate is 99%.
As the National Breast Cancer Foundation states, many breast cancer symptoms are invisible and not noticeable without a professional screening, but some symptoms can be caught early just by being proactive about your breast health.
