2009-2010 Women’s Basketball Season Overview

Women Basketball Team, ASA

Brooklyn, NY—The women’s basketball team completed its season on Sunday, falling to TCI 62-58 in the Region XV championship game. The Lady Avengers reached the finals in only its first year of existence as an NJCAA-affiliated women’s basketball program. The team finished with an over-all record of 11-8, defeating eventual champ, TCI, three times during the regular season and was named regular Region XV champs. This season showed the promise of a very successful program to come in the near future.

The young Lady Avengers started off 0-2 to start the season, but was able turn it around immediately into a 3 game winning streak, including 2 wins against TCI. Between December 15th and January 28th, the Lady Avengers would go on a tear, with six straight wins. On January 28th would defeat Monroe College on their home floor, making history by being the only team to do so in 59 home games spanning a 6-year period. To end the regular season, the Lady Avengers mustered up two more victories by defeating the Community College of Rhode Island away and TCI at home.

In terms of individual post-season accolades, the Lady Avengers did not disappoint one bit. Sophomore guard, Denyse Moore (Hampton, VA/Woodside) was named Region XV Division I Co-Player of the Year. Moore finished the season leading Lady Avengers in scoring with 14.1ppg, in assists with over 6.0apg, and steals with 2.68spg. She was joined on the All-Region First team by sophomore guard Tyche’ Mozie (Washington D.C./H.D. Woodson). Mozie finished second on the team in scoring with 13.7ppg, first on the team in rebounding with 5.6rpg, and first on the team in 3-point field goals made with 42 on the season. The All-Region Second team was dominated by the Lady Avengers with the three selections of freshmen forwards Patrice Lewis (Queens, NY/August Martin) and Leryncia Miller (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter’s), and freshman center, Shanade Bernard (Queens, NY/Queens H.S. of Teaching). Head Coach, Adia Revell, was named Region XV Coach of the Year, for her efforts in leading the Lady Avengers to success in only their first season on NJCAA competition.

The team will have a more veteran look for the 2010-11 season, as it only loses 3 players from this year’s roster due to graduation.
