The ASA Family meets to provide relief for the people of the Haiti

New York, NY (01/14/10) The ASA family held a meeting in the student lounge of their Brooklyn Campus on Thursday January 14, 2010 to plan coordinated events that would support goods and clothing to be donated to the tattered nation of Haiti. ASA students, faculty, and staff are all devastated by the tragic events we have seen since a massive earthquake demolished the city of Port-au-Prince. The newly elected Student Government Association President, Ms. Chermain Miller, sent out an urgent e-mail to the student body of ASA. Ms. Miller felt that “the students should put together a plan and support the people of Haiti by any means necessary.” The same sentiment was felt by Ms. Helen Polynsky (Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs), Ms. Tatyana Kryzhanovskaya (Director of the Student Advisement), Mr. Edward Kufor (Chairperson of the Business Department), and Ms. Martine Laurore-Weaver (Admissions Department). All of these people and many others decided that a meeting should be planned with the Dean of Student Services, Mr. Derek Jackson, and that a coordinated effort should take place to bring our humanitarian efforts together.

Our Senior Vice President, Dr. Alexander Agafonov felt that “this was an important and humane endeavor.” Dr. Agafonov stated,” in this time of human despair I am proud to be an administrator at ASA, we have a caring and compassionate campus and Mr. Shchegol, our President, will support our students and our family.” During the meeting, our Associate Director for Alumni Affairs, Ms. Marina Silguero, suggested the following: she will coordinate the collection of donated clothing in her office at 81 Willoughby Street in Brooklyn (room 301) from 9am -6pm. We are asking for the following to be brought to room 301: socks, tee shirts, underwear, baby clothes, towelettes, toothbrushes, soap, diapers, wipes, band aids, peroxide, rubbing alcohol, feminine products, and toiletries. It was also stated by Ms. Martine Laurore-Weaver that the admissions office will coordinate the collection of can goods and dried baby food. These items will be stored in the office of the Director of Brooklyn Admissions, Ms. Alice Perez, at 81 Willoughby Street in Brooklyn (1st floor). We are advising that the collection will begin on Friday 01/15/2010 and will end on Friday 01/22/10.

The college will provide a Crisis Counselor beginning 01/19/2010. The student lounge contained 75 people during this planning event. There was a moment of silence and each person in the room held someone’s hand while Ms. Martine Laurore-Weaver led the room in prayer. We would like to thank so many others:  Ms. Kirsten Stallworth, Ms. Lucretia Ursu, Professor Pompilio Gomez, and our student Mr. Jean Germain, who stated that he had not heard from any of his relatives in Haiti. During the meeting, we learned that a number of our students do not know the status of their family members in Haiti. But as Mr. Germain stated, “I do know that I have a family here at ASA Institute. Thank you everyone and may the Haitian people have all of our prayers.”
