(New York, New York-) The Speaker of the New York State Assembly Sheldon Silver, one of the most powerful and influential public officials in the entire state, visited ASA Institute’s Manhattan Campus on December 18, 2008.  The visit was described by Alex Shchegol, President of ASA Institute, as “the most important ever” made by any public official.  “Welcome, Speaker Silver.  It is truly a great pleasure to have you come and visit ASA and see for yourself why ACICS, our accrediting body, has named us an Honor Roll Institution,” Alex Shchegol said.

The visit included a complete tour of ASA’s facilities led by Mr. Shchegol and Dr. Alexander Agafonov, Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs.  It then culminated in a program where the Speaker was able to address ASA’s students, staff, and faculty.

“It’s a pleasure to meet all of you.  I want to assure you that all of us at the New York State Assembly are working hard to make sure that quality education will always be accessible to the people of this great state, “Speaker Silver said.  Also among those who spoke during the program included Steven Cymbrowitz, Assembly Member from Brooklyn; and Dan Holt, former Chairman of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. In introducing Speaker Silver during the program, ASA Vice President of Government and Community Relations Roberto Dumaual said that it is truly impressive that Speaker Silver has occupied such a position since 1994 and was first elected to the Assembly in 1976 representing Manhattan’s 62nd Assembly District.

ASA Institute was founded on July 1, 1985 and currently has over 3,000 students at both its Brooklyn and Midtown Manhattan campuses.  ASA offers Associate of Occupational Studies degrees in the Health Disciplines, Business, Criminal Justice, and Computer Technology.  ASA faculty and staff take pride in providing students with a career-focused education and student-centered academic support services.
