ASA Basketball Show Well on ALL-Region Teams
Subtitle: Moore and Colonette Earn Player of the Year Honors

February 22, 2010

Valhalla, NY----Yesterday afternoon Region XV Division I athletic administrators and basketball coaches voted on the All-Region XV Division Teams, including Player of the Year Honors and Coach of the Year Honors for the women. The ASA men’s and women’s basketball teams did not disappoint with the men’s team taking home Player of the Year Honors and a Second-Team All-Region selection, and the women’s team capturing Co-Player of the Year honors and three other players being selected All-Region.

The Lady Avengers cleaned up yesterday, walking away with five All-Region Awards. Sophomore guard, Denyse Moore (Hampton, VA/Woodside) was named Co-Player of the Year, finishing the season with team highs in scoring average (14.0ppg) and assists with 6.1 per game. She finished the season ranked 8th in the nation in the assist category. On top of her offensive accomplishments, Moore would be the Lady Avengers’ ball hawk, averaging close to 2.5 steals per game. Sophomore combo-guard Tyche’ Mozie (District of Columbia/H.D. Woodson) joins Moore on the All-Region First Team. The versatile wing finished the regular season second on the team in scoring (13.6ppg) and tied for first in rebounding, pulling down close to 5.5 boards per game. Mozie scored a season high 27 points against Hostos CC, which included 6 three-point field goals. The All-Region Second Team was owned by the ASA freshmen front-court players. Forward Leryncia Miller (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter’s) lead the way down low averaging 11.1ppg and 5.1rpg, finishing first on the team in field goal percentage at 55%. She was accompanied by the inside-outside threat of forward deluxe Patrice Lewis (Queens, NY/August Martin) who finished the regular season averaging 11.0ppg , close to 5 rebounds per, and finished 2nd on the team in 3-point field goals made with 19. Rounding out the Second Team selections is center, Shanade Bernard (Queens, NY/H.S. for Teaching) who finished the season working her into the starting line-up and averaging solid numbers with 5.8ppg and 3.4rpg. Bernard was ASA’s clutch performer on February 18th in their battle against TCI, where she grabbed 2 clutch rebounds in final 2 minutes of the game and hit the two free-throws that would put the Generals away for good to hold on to the 60-55 victory. Head Coach, Adia Revell, would earn her own individual accolades by being named Region XV Coach of the year. Revell led the first NJCAA-affiliated women’s basketball team ever at ASA to an undefeated Division I region record at 5-0. The Lady Avengers have earned an automatic bid to the Region XV Tournament Championship game.

On the men’s side, sophomore forward, Roberto Colonette (Queens, NY/Robert F. Kennedy) was voted the Region XV Division I Player of the Year. Colonette was consistent and reliable throughout the entire 2009-10 season for Coach Ken Wilcox and the 19-5 Avengers, finishing up the regular averages of 12.5 points per game, 8.7 rebounds per game, and 2.0 blocks per game. The 6-7 post-player really stepped his game up when it came to regional opponents averaging close to 17 ppg, 9.7 rpg, and 2.5 blocks per contest. In ASA’s final regular season Region XV match-up against TCI, Colonette took matters into his own hands scoring a season-high 29 points and pulling down 11 boards for the impressive double-double. Sophomore guard, Garel Craig (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack), was named to the All-Region Second Team. Craig proved to be the Avengers’ primary scoring option on the perimeter, scoring 15.8 points per game and leading the team in assists with 3.8 per game. He would score a season-high 27 points against Montgomery Germantown, going 3-5 from behind arc, and shooting 8-9 from the free-throw line in a 90-84 ASA victory.
