Women's Tennis Successful at Wilson/ITA Junior College Regional Championships
September 25-27th West Windsor, NJ---This past weekend, the Women's Tennis team competed in the Wilson/ITA Junior College Regional Championships at hosted by Mercer Community College. This would be ASA's first ever tournament as a program. The event lasted from Friday to Sunday and 12 northeastern region schools coming from as north as Syracuse and as south as Maryland competed. For the overall event, ASA finished with an overall record of 18-8, finishing third. One highlight of the event came on the last day where the doubles team of freshmen Soizette Simmons (Brooklyn, NY/Abraham Lincoln) and Simona Mrazova (Bratislava, Slovak Republic) defeated the doubles team from Harford College (6-1; 6-1) to become Flight 'A' champions of the event, qualifying for Small College Championships in Mobile, AL October 16-18. ASA also had the overall topflight singles performance of all 12 teams with Soizette Simmons, Simona Mrazova, Viktoriya Popova (Severodonetsk, Ukraine/Severodonetskaya), and Krystal Thomas (Jamaica, NY/Applied Communications) all advancing in the latter rounds of their respective Flights. With the absence of two of their top five players, Coach Bowie was very happy with the immediate progress his team made over the weekend. 'I am proud of my ladies and we learned a lot from the event. Some inexperience cost us a couple of matches, but we will learn from those mistakes and only get better. From this competition, ASA Women's Tennis has earned respect already around the region. I am very optimistic about the remainder of the season based on our first ever tournament.' |
