match on Saturday.
Franklin, MA-----Yesterday, the men’s was unable to keep their post-season alive by falling to Massasoit 2-1 in the Region XXI Division I Tournament hosted by Dean College. ASA was able to keep the score knotted 0-0 at the end of the first half, despite being out-shot 6-1, and going against the wind.
John Montoya (Soph./Goal/Queens, NY/Newtown) had a solid day in goal, saving 10 on the day. Eventually, in the 55th minute, Massasoit, would break the tie, going up 1-0. In the 65th minute, the Avengers would claw their way back on a goal by
Prince Takyi (Soph./Forward/Bronx, NY/Teaching and Professions) from a beautiful touch feed from
Lindsay Hernandez (Fresh./Forward/Brooklyn, NY/FDR). The score would remain deadlocked at 1-1, until Massasoit got a breakaway opportunity on an ASA defensive miscue, which led to the goal that put Massasoit up 2-1. After the goal, the next three minutes would get very interesting. After multiple attacks by ASA, the Avengers would put a goal in with only 1 minute to go in regulation time. However, the goal was called back by the referees on a controversial off-sides goal. Massasoit would then get the opportunity to regain possession and run out the clock for the 2-1 win.
ASA ends its season 8-8 in its first season of NJCAA competition, and its first appearance in the post-season as a program.
