ASA Football Gets Big Win Against #15 Lackawanna 19-18
October 17, 2009
Peckville, PA----This afternoon the Avengers picked up its biggest win thus far of its young existence as a program over the #15 nationally ranked Lackawanna College Falcons by the close score of 19-18. The Avengers meant business from the get-go, as the defense forced Lackawanna to punt away after three downs. The offense would immediately take charge marching 70 yards on 10 plays, which concluded with an acrobatic touchdown grab by Malcolm Eugene (Freshman/Wide Receiver/Huntington, NY/John Glenn H.S.) from starting quarterback Travis Eakin (Freshman/Quarterback/Toney, AL/Madison Academy). ASA would not convert the extra point. The Avengers held on to the 6-0 lead going into the second quarter.
ASA’s lead did not last long. Fewer than 3 minutes into the 2nd quarter, Lackawanna would perform a trick double-pass play for 42-yards, which led to a Lackawanna 2-yard rushing touchdown. Lackawanna would also not convert on the extra point. With 3:09 left in the half, Lackawanna would take the lead on a 17-yard touchdown pass. With Travis Eakin injured, Steve Torres (Freshman/Quarterback/Yonkers, NY/Gorton H.S.) would take the snaps and lead the Avengers down the field 79 yards, concluding with a 23-yard touchdown reception by Kevenski McGee (Freshman/Tight End/Pahokee, FL/Pahokee H.S.) to tie the game and end the half 12-12.
The score would remain locked at 12 until Lackawanna intercepted a Torres pass as ASA was threatening in the red-zone, and returning the interception 95-yards and the lead with 5:17 to go in the 3rd quarter. After the touchdown, the Lackawanna defense held tough forcing ASA to punt away on consecutive possessions. However, keeping their poise while fighting through the bad weather and injuries during the afternoon, the Avengers would dig in for one last score. With 5:45 left in the game, Torres connected with Brandon Brown (Freshman/Wide Receiver/Newark, NJ/Freehold Boro H.S.) on a 25-yard pass and reception to tie the game 18-18. Brown’s touchdown catch would cap off an exceptional 4 reception 130-yard day. David Valdes (Freshman/Wide Receiver/Miami, FL/Felix Varela H.S.) came in to put the Avengers up 19-18 with his extra-point kick. As it has been all season, ASA’s reliable defense shutdown any hopes of Lackawanna winning. Ivan Nicholas (Freshman/Strong Safety/Jacksonville, FL/Robert E. Lee H.S.) finished his day with 8 tackles (7 solo) and 1 sack. He would be accompanied with strong performances up-front by Gilbert Pena (Freshman/Nose Tackle/Yonkers, NY/Saunders H.S.) 4 tackles (all solo), Jo Jo Blanks (Freshman/Linebacker/Pembroke, NC/Purnell Swett) with 5 tackles (all solo), and Donte Carter (Freshman/Defensive Lineman/Collingswood, NJ/Camden Catholic) who recovered a key fumble towards the end of the game.
ASA improves to 3-2 on the season after defeating its 2nd NJCAA Top-25 ranked team. After a bye-week, the Avengers travel to take on the Albright J.V. November 1st 3pm.
