Women’s Basketball: Lady Avengers Take First Region XV Game Over Globe

January 24, 2012

Recap-Globe(1-24-12)

BRONX, NY --- Sophomore guard Latasia Ward (Bronx, NY) tallied 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals while playing in her home borough to lead ASA over Globe 58-37 in Region XV action Tuesday evening. Ward was 6-for-9 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from 3-point range to lead all scorers. Freshman wing Sashana Bucknor (New Haven, CT) responded well to a rare start, posting a double-double of 11 points and a game-leading 11 rebounds. Bucknor also swatted away four shots, had a couple of steals and an assist.

The Lady Avengers (16-1) led the contest from wire-to-wire, and while the outcome never seemed to be in doubt, Globe gave ASA its best shot, especially in the first half.

The opening stanza was punctuated by scoring runs – ASA opened the game with a 14-4 run, followed by an 8-0 run by Globe (14-12 ASA). The Lady Avengers would respond with a 10-3 stretch (24-14), only to give up a 7-0 spurt to Globe (24-21). ASA would score the final five points of the half to take a 29-21 advantage. A second-half opening 8-0 run by ASA – sparked by a Ward 3-pointer – put the Lady Avengers up by double digits, where they would stay for the rest of the game.

Freshman guard Deborah Anderson (Tacoma, WA) was the third and final ASA player in double figures, scoring 11 points on the night, including three 3-pointers. Anderson also had four assists and three steals.

ASA returns to action on Saturday, January 28th when they take on Cecil College in a 2:00 PM tilt at St. Francis College.
