Women's Basketball: Lady Avengers Outlast Monroe College in OT January 17, 2012 ![]() BROOKLYN, NY --- Since the ASA Women's Basketball team joined the NJCAA during the 2009-10 season, ASA College vs. Monroe College has produced its share of memorable moments for the Lady Avengers. The snapping of Monroe's 59-game home win streak in 2009-10. ASA's victory in 2010-11 after suffering through a four-game, 48-day losing streak – over the eventual Division II National Champions. And now this. The Lady Avengers and the 12th-ranked Lady Mustangs played a game for the ages, as ASA pulled out a 68-60 victory over Monroe Tuesday night in the first overtime game in program history. Three ASA players scored in double figures, led by freshman guard Deborah Anderson (Tacoma, WA), who notched 15 points despite shooting 3-for-20 from the field. Sophomore transfers Angel Porter (Brooklyn, NY) and Brittany Webb (New York, NY) played well off the bench in their first ASA-Monroe game, adding 14 and 10 points respectively. These two teams may not play another game that was as tightly contested as this one. There were 14 lead changes and 10 ties; neither team led by more than eight points in the game; and both teams posted matching totals for turnovers (31) and made field goals (20). With the game as close as it was, it would be ASA’s resolve and fundamentals that would give them the edge. With 6:43 remaining in the second half and facing Monroe’s largest lead of the game, 51-43, ASA would go on a 15-4 run to take a 58-55 advantage. Anderson hit a 3-pointer and three free throws and freshman wing Sashana Bucknor (New Haven, CT) scored five of her nine points during the run. After a Monroe 3-pointer and offsetting free throws from Porter and Monroe’s Jasmine McRoy, who led all scorers with 26, Porter missed the potential game-winning runner from the top of the key as time expired. In the extra frame, ASA would finally gain breathing room, knocking down seven free throws as part of a 9-1 advantage in overtime. Overall, ASA dominated the rebound battle, holding a 75-50 advantage over the Lady Mustangs. Sophomore forward Tanikqua McFarlane (Queens, NY) pulled down 19 boards and Bucknor grabbed 12 of her own, nearly recording a double-double. The Lady Avengers converted on 11 more free throws in the game, 23-12. ASA is off to its best start in school history at 15-1 and this series’ propensity for thrilling moments has given the team its most exciting victory to date. |
