Men’s Basketball: Avengers Dig In On Defense and Defeat Monroe CC 65-62 January 14, 2012 ![]() Herkimer, NY---- The ASA men’s basketball team has advanced to the championship game of the Herkimer CC “Philly Tournament” having defeated Monroe CC in the first game of the event 65-63. ASA’s defense proved to be too much for the down the stretch of the game. ASA would make key stops and forced turnovers in the latter moments of the game when they really counted. Four out five of ASA’s starters scored in double figures. Freshman forward Mike McLeod (Newburgh, NY) would lead the way with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman forward Sherard McKinney (Bronx, NY) gave a huge effort of the bench in only his third game back from injury with 12 points on 5-5 from the floor and 7 boards. The game was very close with the neither team leading by more than six points. Down three points with less than four minutes, freshman guard Dayvon Whitaker (Poughkeepsie, NY)[Pictured] would make a clutch three-pointer to tie the game 59-59. ASA would take the lead for good with 1:20 remaining. The Tribunes had a three pointer to force the game into overtime, which fell short. ASA improves to 13-3 overall with the win and stretches their winning streak to ten. ASA will take on the host Herkimer CC tomorrow in the tournament’s championship game. Tipoff will be at 2pm. |
