SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE DEAN OF STUDENT SERVICES - DEREK JACKSON

Manhattan, NY – Last Friday, November 18, 2011 – ASA College held its 2nd Phi Theta Kappa International Honor’s Society Induction Ceremony for the year 2011. Over fifty students were scheduled for this ceremony but only twenty-eight of the top, best and brightest students did attend. The number one reason for student absence from the ceremony was the fact that the absentees had classes and did not want to be absent from any of their scheduled classes. As the Dean of Student Services I recognize that many of these students are really dedicated to their academics and would rather keep perfect attendance than honor their accomplishments at a ceremony.   The ceremony had a number of speakers; the Associate Vice President of Education, Ms. Helen Polynsky,  the Dean of Academic Programs, Dr. Concetta Gallo, the Brooklyn Director of Academic Affairs, Ms. Gloria Longakit, the Manhattan Director of Academic Affairs, Mr. Nelson Galindo and the keynote speaker Mr. Joshua Freeburn, Phi Theta Kappa Regional President for New York State.  Leading the ceremony and the Master of Ceremonies was our Dean of Students, Mr. Derek Jackson. Dean Jackson and Mr. Freeburn did swear-in the students as new members of the Beta Rho Chi chapter at ASA.  Dean Jackson was quoted “that this is the first time that five students were sworn in as officers of this chapter.  This induction ceremony and the swearing in of officers increased our chapter from a one star level to a three star level.” The Beta Rho Chi chapter is growing rapidly at the college with a total of 129 new members in 2010, and a total of 161 new members as of November 2011. This is a 24% increase in the number of members that are at the top of the class at ASA College. Congratulations to all of the inductees and all of the Phi Theta Kappa advisors that support them.
