Men's Soccer: ASA Bends But Doesn’t Break, Upsets National Power Mercer County CC

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. --- The ASA Men’s Soccer team earned a major victory last night, defeating perennial contender and six-time NJCAA National Champion Mercer County CC 1-0.

ASA (3-3-1) would take the enthusiastic Mercer crowd out of the game early with a first-minute score by sophomore midfielder Daniel Oduro (Ghana) [pictured], assisted by sophomore midfielder Seinard Bowen (St. Vincent).

Both teams would have chances to score during the first half, but neither would be able to connect, keeping the score at 1-0 at the end of the first half.

The second half, however, would keep ASA on its heels and everyone on the edge of their seats. Mercer, ranked as high as #10 in the country in 2011, came out aggressively in the latter period, controlling the ball within the Avengers’ zone. That advantage would lead to several quality scoring chances. Fortunately for ASA, the shots that didn’t miss slightly or end up hitting the crossbar were thwarted by freshman goalkeeper Angel Cordero (Brooklyn, NY), who recorded 6 saves.

The Avengers’ next game will be on Sunday, October 16th at 1pm at Dutchess CC.
