AVENGERS REBOUND WITH CONVINCING VICTORY OVER WAGNER JV October 8, 2011 ![]() STATEN ISLAND, NY --- The ASA Football team put last week’s tough loss behind them in resounding fashion, pitching a shutout and routing non-NJCAA member Wagner College JV, 33-0. The Avengers posted a balanced scoring effort, recording at least one touchdown in every quarter. Freshman RB Kadeem Willis (Murray, KY) paced the attack by scoring on a 17-yard run in the opening stanza. Sophomore QB Jared Johnston (Dumfries, VA) would connect with Sophomore WR Fredson Salomon (Miami, FL) for ASA’s next touchdown, a 29-yard pass play in the second quarter. On the next drive, the Avengers defense would step up, recording the first of two interceptions. The play would be the catalyst for ASA’s next scoring drive, capped off by a 1-yard TD run by Freshman RB Anthony Clanton (Garner, NC). The score gave ASA a 20-0 lead heading into the half. The second half proved to be more of the same for the Avengers, beginning with a 12-yard TD run by Willis, his second score of the game. The most exciting play of the game came in the fourth quarter with the game clearly in hand. Freshman WR Willie Wilson (Miami, FL)[pictured] fielded a Seahawks punt at the ASA 35-yard line and proceeded to maneuver his way into the endzone for a 65-yard return TD, boosting the score to 33-0. ASA would record its second interception of the game with less than three minutes left and would run out the clock to put a stamp on the shutout victory. Sophomore LB Aaron Fant (Willingboro, NJ) led the ASA defense with 5.0 total tackles (4 solo, 2 TFL). ASA dominated in all facets of the game, putting up over ten times the offensive yardage (253-21) and stymieing Wagner at every turn. The Avengers have a bye this week but will return to action on October 8 as they travel to take on Northeast Football Conference rival Dean. Kickoff is set for 12 noon. |
