Baseball: 2011 Season Overview

May 15, 2011

Group Shot

Brooklyn, NY - The Avengers ended their season against Anne Arundel yesterday afternoon with an exit from the Region XX Tournament 10-7.

ASA ends the season with an overall record of 29-13. The team would finish with best record in Region XV-Division I play with a record of 10-2. The highlight of the season would be a sweep of Monroe College for the Region XV-Division I Championship, ASA’s second in a row. For the team’s effort, Head Coach, Francisco Perez, would be named the Region XV-Division I Coach of the Year.

Sanchez and Gil

The pitching during the Region XV play-offs was lights out for the Avengers. The legend of the 2011 Region XV-Division I Player of the Year Jonathan Sanchez (Cotui, DR) reached an all-time high with how he ended Game I in the top of the ninth inning after having thrown 120 pitches. With runners on second and third, with no out, he would strike out the next three batters all swinging to end the game 3-2. In the second game of the series, sophomore pitcher Isaac Gil (New York, NY) was lights out in front of a number of Major League scouts, shutting out the Mustangs for the 4-0 complete game win. Gil would only allow three hits in Game 2.

Six players would be named all-region. Jonathan Sanchez would be named Region XV-Division I Player of the Year and Coach Perez would be named the region’s Coach of the Year for the second year in a row.

Congratulations to the ASA baseball team for another very successful season. Expect even more success in 2012!
