Please join Lisa Baw and the rest of the ASA community as they celebrate her work at ASA’s Manhattan campus (1293 Broadway, One Herald Square, on the corner of 34th Street) on Thursday, April 28th.  The exhibit will be on display from 4pm to 5:30pm in Room 311.  For more information, please call Ling Zhang (212) 672-6486 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting            (212) 672-6486      end_of_the_skype_highlighting.

New York, NY—As beautiful as the artwork she creates is the incredible story of ASA student, Lisa Baw.  Her story is one of overcoming obstacles in order to take advantage of all of the wonderful things in life.  With her persistence, Ms. Baw has produced an amazing canvas in her young life with and without her paintbrush.

Ms. Baw was born in Taipei, Taiwan with a severe case of cerebral palsy and was expected to never be able to learn how to walk or speak.  Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the motor control centers of the developing brain and can occur during pregnancy, during childbirth or after birth up to about age three.   Resulting limits in movement and posture cause activity limitation and are often accompanied by disturbances of sensation, depth perception and other sight-based perceptual problems, communication ability, and sometimes even cognition.  Despite Ms. Baw’s vision condition, she found solace in art with the encouragement from her mother at a young age.  Ms. Baw would earn her high school degree in Taiwan before transitioning into college in Taiwan at Vanung University’s Department of Advertisement Design.  In 2007 Ms. Baw made the permanent move to the United States and enrolled at Queensborough Community College to study fine arts and performance.  In 2010 Ms. Baw would enroll at ASA- The College for Excellence.

Outside of her studies, Ms. Baw has been involved with a number of various projects and has been honored with numerous awards.  In 1999 Ms. Baw was awarded the Excellent Novice Award in a joint exhibit with the American Academy of Orthepedic Surgeon’s eMotion Picture of San Francisco.  In 2001 she held solo exhibits at the National Taiwan University Hospital and the National Taiwan Central Library.  Before becoming a student at ASA, Ms. Baw’s work was on display at a joint exhibition held in the school.  Her artwork was also chosen by IBM to grace their calendars and postcards.  Ms. Baw has returned to Taiwan a number of times for solo exhibitions in the past two years.

Using her artistic talents and determination, Ms. Baw has lent her services to a number of charities and organizations.  In 2009, with the help of her supportive parents, Ms. Baw founded her own nonprofit Wish Dreamer Foundation.  The Wish Dreamer Foundation hosts various events including but not limited to seminars, conventions, ceremonies, and performances.  These events are intended to allow those who are disabled and/or are facing life-threatening diseases make friends like them all around the country, learn how to reach their highest ability, showcase their talent, and be rewarded for what they do.  The foundation also has an event crowning the “Wish Dreamer of the Year.” This reward is given to the person who has demonstrated the most persevering and powerful determination and happiness.  Wish Dreamer also funds a scholarship for the person who demonstrates the most artistic talent for that year.  Along with her foundation and her exhibits that have raised tens of thousands of dollars for different charities, Ms. Baw has volunteered as an assistant swimming coach to train blind and autistic swimmers, has read the Bible in Chinese to young children at the River of Life Church in New York, and has volunteered as an art teacher for young children in Taiwan.
