LADY AVENGERS WIN BATTLE AGAINST MONROE COLLEGE February 2, 2011 ![]() BROOKLYN, NY-------The last time the ASA Women’s Basketball had notched a victory was a month and a half ago, a December 16th road win against Rockland Community College. With a rival such as Monroe College, sitting at 15-2 on the season, coming to town, it would have been easy to use the team’s struggles as an excuse not to show up. With this team, it was never an option. Led by the sophomore trio of Christina Delille (Queens, NY), Leryncia Miller (Staten Island, NY), and Symonne Davis (Brooklyn, NY), the Lady Avengers (11-8) rose to the occasion, defeating Monroe 73-66 on Monday night at St. Francis College. “We were in one of those stretches that define a season. Missing key players to injury and having lost some close games, we could have easily let a moment like this overwhelm us, yet we stuck together, believed in each other, and just played ASA basketball,” said Head Coach Adia Revell after the game. Delille paced the team with 18 points – including 9-for-10 from the free throw line – and a team-high 4 assists. Miller added 14 points while pulling down eight rebounds and Davis contributed 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Freshman guard Jakoya Duggan (Roselle, NJ) also added 11, rounding out the four Lady Avengers in double figures. The game was a grind, with lead changes, momentum swings and clutch moments abound. ASA overcame a 10-point deficit in the first half to take a 38-37 lead into halftime. Monroe would continue to battle, but the Lady Avengers would pull it out in the end, using key free throws and defensive stops to pull away in the last minute of the game. “We respect every opponent we go up against, and this game was no different. It was a good game, but I know we are capable of more. The closer we get to the post season, the better we need to get – consistency is key,” said Revell, who will take the Lady Avengers on a three-game road trip to Maryland this week. Some of those clutch moments came from sophomore reserve guard Carmen Arias (New York, NY) who scored a key 3-pointer and field goal late in the second to stem the Monroe tide. For the Lady Avengers, the win was the result of hard work through adversity. The team hopes it can propel them through the final month of the regular season and beyond. |
