December 21, 2010

Lamont Middleton

Valhalla, NY----- The men’s basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to Region XV Division I opponent, Globe, tonight in the final second of the game, 84-83. The loss drops ASA to 9-3 on the season going into the Holiday break.

Globe jumped out to an early ten-point lead half-way through the first half. However, the Avengers stormed back, paced by Allan Thomas’ (Queens, NY) thirteen first-half points. ASA would take the 39-38 lead at the half on a buzzer beating jumper by sophomore center, Kevin Briggs (Providence, RI). Briggs would finish the game with ten points, eleven rebounds, and eight blocked shots.

The second half would be a dog fight throughout with both teams exchanging baskets. ASA would make a run starting at the 7:13 mark. The lead would grow to ten with 2:30 left to play on big plays by freshman guard, Lamont Middleton (Harlem, NY). However, the scrappy Globe team never went away, trailing by one with :14 seconds left to play and possession of the ball. ASA would stop Globe on their initial driving lay-up, but the ball was tapped up and in, giving them the winning bucket with .3 seconds left in the game.

ASA was lead by Allan Thomas’ twenty points despite being in foul trouble for the better part of the second half. Lamont Middleton added sixteen points (eleven in the second half) and seven rebounds for the Avengers.

The Avengers are off until January 6 when they travel down to Cecil.
