Medical Assisting
Your Key To Success: Get Advised! This program of study is designed for people who plan to pursue medical assisting and numerous related careers. To provide a strong foundation for career growth, it integrates in-depth medical assisting knowledge with psychology studies, ethnical & legal standards, and communication & interpersonal skills. Students receive primary training in anatomy, physiology, medical emergencies, microbiology, pharmacology, and psychology. They also study medical administration, which encompasses topics like insurance practices, requirements, regulations and how to ensure proper reimbursement for services. Curriculum focuses on essential medical terminology, patient scheduling, medical billing and coding, medical law and ethics. Instructors for all clinical courses are medical doctors (MDs). Graduates are proficient in preparing medical documents and reports and able to work in both the front office and examining room of any healthcare facility. Program Accreditation & Getting Your Certification This program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), upon recommendation of the Curriculum Review Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants’ Endowment. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take: - The Certified Medical Assistant Exam (CMA) – granted by the American Association of Administrative Assistants (AAMA) - The Medical Administrative Assistant, Billing and Coding Specialist Exam – granted by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) - CPR/First Aid Certification Exam – granted by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross. Career Opportunities Graduates are prepared for these careers. Medical Assistant is one of the “Top 25 Fastest Growing Occupations” in New York State, according to the Department of Labor. The program also provides students with a solid foundation to make the transition to a Bachelor’s degree program in Allied Health disciplines. Medical assistants are an integral part of the health care team. Their clinical responsibilities include taking medical histories, recording vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, and assisting physicians during examinations. They may also perform basic procedures on the premises, including drawing blood, administering injections, and performing electrocardiograms (EKGs). Administrative tasks include updating and filing patient records, handling insurance forms and correspondence, scheduling appointments, and assisting with billing and bookkeeping.
